... Well sometimes you don't..

And if you want the good to finally reach you, trying harder is almost never the answer...

I know, because I tried.

I gave it everything I had.

I gave it my BEST shot.

And it didn't work.

I Ended Up With Thirty Years Of Near Misses And One Sentence I Said Out Loud, "That's Just My Place", And I Hated It...

I hated it because I could remember when it began.

• Marseille. I was 8. My family lost our home and moved into two cramped rooms. I watched the coins counted into a saucer, and I watched the money run through careful hands anyway.

Before that year there had been good years. After it, there weren't.

From 8 to 38 I tried everything you've tried. Readers, by the minute. Candles. The Secret. The horoscope every morning. My grandmother's Tarot de Marseille, laid out at night on the kitchen table.

Then he explained. Your good things travel down your family line to reach you: the money, the lucky break, the phone call.

Somewhere up that line, a debt was left unpaid.
